Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect at my first appointment?

Your first session is about getting to know you — your concerns, your goals, and your hopes for therapy. We’ll explore what’s brought you in and discuss the best approach to support your wellbeing. It’s a safe, non-judgmental space where you can ask questions and proceed at your own pace.

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

No referral is needed to see a psychologist at Synergy Clinical Services. However, if you’d like to access Medicare rebates, you’ll need:

  • A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, and

  • An associated referral letter from your GP (sent with the MHTP).

Alternatively, Medicare rebates can also be accessed with a valid referral from a psychiatrist.

What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan (previously known as a Mental Health Care Plan) is created by your GP or psychiatrist and allows you to access Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions per calendar year. Your GP or psychiatrist will assess your situation and provide the necessary documentation, which must be accompanied by the appropriate referral letter.

How long is a session?

Sessions typically run for 50 minutes.

What therapies do you use?

We tailor our approach to suit your individual needs, drawing on a range of evidence-based therapies including:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing)

  • Schema Therapy

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

  • ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy)

  • Mindfulness-based approaches

Do you work with children or teens?

No. Our services are focused on working with adults (18+).

How do I book an appointment?

You can book by:

We encourage enquiries to be made directly by the person seeking support, unless you are a professional referrer.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 48 hours’ notice (two full working days) if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or missed appointments may incur a fee, as this time is set aside specifically for you, involves your clinician making individual preparations for the session, and is difficult to fill at short notice.

Are your services confidential?

Yes. All sessions are conducted with the utmost confidentiality. Your personal information and what you share in therapy are protected in accordance with professional and legal guidelines. There are rare exceptions where disclosure may be required (e.g., risk of harm), but this will be discussed with you where possible.
